
Teaching ESL in a Foreign Country
English as a second language commonly known as (ESL) is a certification in which instructors are teaching English language to the foreigners whose first language is not English. The teacher will teach you the English language in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The seasoned professionals who are teaching this are also commonly called as English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) teachers. If you are interested in becoming an ESL instructor and want to teach this language abroad then the most important trait that you need to possess is patience. There will be number of students in your class who will get frustrated by learning this language as this is not their first language. The teachers of English as a second language will try to approach the English language proficiency from practical perspective. The instructor will try to focus on conversational and job-related communication skills of the students. Bachelor’s degree
For the ESL teachers the minimum requirement is the bachelor’s degree. The teachers are required to earn their degrees in the field of education, English language; English writing or it should be in teaching English as a second language. There is a particular coursework that is required in your bachelor’s degree like the usage of technology in teaching English, coping with learning disabilities; you need to learn diverse cultures and you should learn the ways to develop lesson plans.
ESL Training
After the completion of your bachelor’s degree the ESL teaching aspirants are required to complete an ESL training program. In this stage the instructors will get a lesson about assessing language skills of students, they will learn the ways of teaching grammar lessons and other practical conversational skills.
Receiving a License
After the completion of ESL training the teachers are required to get a license which is also known as a certification from the department which will allow them to work as a professional teacher. The eligibility criteria for induction of ESL teachers will be different in almost every country. So, it is highly advisable to check the steps that are necessary in the respective geographical area. There are some common requirements which are almost similar in every other country. Those common requirements are holding a graduation degree and the completion of training program. Some countries around the world are demanding a license from the teaching aspirants. The interested candidates who want to teach English as a second language abroad must have a clear background; they must not have any criminal background.
