Should You Hang Out with Your Students After School?
There is a very sacred relationship that exists between a teacher and a student. It will directly affect the progress of students, their interests in the school activities and their motivation for the studies and finally it will also affect their social life.
If the relationship of a teacher student will be good enough then it will help the students in accepting the rules and regulations of their institutions and less disciplinary violations can be seen in the school premises. A healthy relationship between the teacher and student will also enhance interest of students in extra co-curricular activities. They will take more interest in learning. Teachers should try creating a positive bond with their students by trying to spend time with them casually outside the classroom such as at a book café, or a group brunch etc. These are simple yet effective ways of developing a good relationship with the students.
Positive Points
Following are some of the advantages that a relationship of student and a teacher outside the school can bring in the life of a student.
- It is experienced all around the world that students who are creating a strong bond with their teachers are performing comparatively better than those who don’t have a strong bondage. This thing is enhancing the academic performance of the students.
- All students in the class will not be same. They will be from different social and financial backgrounds. The students with weak background will be in inferiority complex. The students like these can minimize their complexes and they can enhance their performance with the strong establishment of their relationship with students.
- The most effective thing that this relationship can brought in the students is their interpersonal communication skills. The students can learn to cope with the problems that they will face in the outside world.

Negative Points
Following are some of the disadvantages that a relationship of student and a teacher outside the school can be seen.
- The first and foremost thing that can be very dangerous for the life of a student is the sexual harassment. We have heard about so many incidents like these around us. It all depends upon the mala fide intentions of the teacher. If a female student is meeting her teacher outside the school premises and they are hanging out or going to party then a teacher with bad intentions can take advantage of the situation. These types of incidents can bring devastating psychological implications in the life of students.
- Meeting teachers after school hours and hanging out with them will also create a feeling of dependency in students. The students will be unable to take prompt decisions in difficult times. They will look up to their teachers.
There is no harm for teachers to hang out with their students if it leads to mentorship. However, teachers should not cross the line between professional help and plain friends for the sake of solely friendship.
